% These are the bagpipe tunes from George Skene's manuscript book of 1715,
% Adv.MS.5.2.21 in the National Library of Scotland, formerly the Library
% of the Faculty of Advocates. The rest of the book is fiddle music (with
% some of the filthiest tune titles ever committed to paper). As far as I
% know, these are the oldest notated examples of music explicitly intended
% for the bagpipes. All of them are variation sets on familiar Lowland
% Scots songs. I've kept as near to the original MS as ABC allows; any
% intentional changes are indicated in the tune headers.
% Since this is the very first attempt at writing pipe music down, none of
% the usual conventions can be taken for granted. For example, Skene
% couldn't make his mind up whether to write in A like modern Highland pipe
% notation or in G like Northumbrian pipe music. However, the notes are
% clear enough; Skene knew what he was doing.
% As to what the ornaments mean; the MS predates the introduction of the
% Continental flute into Scotland by about ten years, so you can't use
% sources like Hotteterre's flute tutor as a guide. There are later
% sources for the recorder that describe similar notation, and since Scots
% recorder music from earlier in the century (like Thomson's MS of 1702) is
% consistent with them, this might be the best guide. But none of these
% use the "gr" marking (here translated as "~") or have the "x" sign, though
% an "x" written somewhat differently means a trill in some other sources
% of the period.
% My guess is that the ornament composed of two slanted lines is really a
% hastily-written version of the "=" sign. Where I've marked two vertical
% lines - "||" - this is clearly intentional in the MS.
% This was created on a Macintosh with Phil Taylor's ABC editor, BarFly.
% It has also been tested on Laurie Griffiths' Muse for Windows.
