% ====================================================================== % % Atalanta Fugiens % (Atalanta Fleeing) % fifty alchemical fugues by Michael Maier % % ====================================================================== % Maier's "Atalanta Fugiens" (1617-18) is a remarkable early example of % a multimedia artwork. It describes the alchemical process in fifty % stages, each illustrated by a six-line Latin verse set to Maier's own % music, an emblematic illustration, and a prose commentary. This file % only has the music, which I have transcribed into ABC from Joscelyn % Godwin's edition; see % for details of where to order this. This is with Godwin's permission, % but the ABC coding is entirely my responsibility. % The illustrations and translations of the text are available on the % web at three sites: % * in English, Adam Maclean's enormous alchemy site: % % * in French, Herve Delboy's site: % % * a site-in-progress from Hereward Tilton in Australia, who is doing % a doctorate on this work: % % The illustrations alone are available at % % As far as I know there is not yet a complete facsimile of the original % on the Internet; a print facsimile was published by Barenreiter, and % there is a Spanish edition which may also contain the original score % (I haven't seen it: ). % You are NOT going to make much sense of this without having the text % and images as well, either in print or via your web browser. % I have deviated from Godwin's edition by removing barlines (there are % none in the original) and this version does not match the text to the % music; I hope to do that in a later release, with the parts separated % out. Also, ABC can't yet represent Maier's metric indications. The % mode indications I've added are sometimes a bit arbitrary. % As with my other ABC files, this is intended to be readable in source % form (use a fixed-width font). I have, as far as possible, aligned % the parts vertically. % There is some defensive coding with accidentals - ABC applications % disagree on whether these are to be interpreted in the Renaissance % or modern manner, so I have added redundant accidentals which should % be read the same way under all conceivable interpretions. % I have also added MIDI instrumentation in the syntax BarFly uses; other % programs will probably ignore this, which is fine by me. It's purely % to make the parts clearly audible on primitive machines like the ones % I have; you are not expected to take it seriously. (There are no bowed % string sounds, simply because the Roland-supplied ones I have with my % Mac software are unlistenably awful). I have also pushed the tempi % beyond the speeds it might be reasonable to sing at - there are no % hints of tempo in Maier's book. % Godwin's book contains detailed analyses of the musical symbolism in % these pieces which I will not summarize here. The basic form of each % piece is a two-voice canon over a ground which is rarely varied much. % The overall structure derives from the Greek myth of Atalanta, who % challenged her suitors to a footrace and had the losers all killed, % until Hippomenes raced her carrying golden apples, which he threw % in front of her, distracting her and letting him catch up. The myth % is made to symbolize the struggle to fix the Philosophical Mercury % with Sulphur in pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone. Musically, the % Atalanta part always leads the Hippomenes one in canon until the last % few pieces, when more complex relationships are introduced. The % pitch ranges assigned to the voices are varied in every way possible. % The texts and pictures have nothing directly to do with the Atalanta % story: they are based on other myths and images which had been given % alchemical significance. % One run-through of a fugue fits two lines of text, so each piece was % intended to be sung three times, as the "Christe eleison" theme would % have been in liturgical use. % These are basically meditative pieces, and it is doubtful if Maier % ever expected them to be performed publicly (though they have been). % As such, experimenting with them on your own in whatever way makes % sense to you is at least as authentic as trying to assemble a vocal % trio to sing them. % Thanks to Laura Conrad for spotting a mistake in an earlier version. % This version uses the now-standard ABC multivoice syntax instead of % the old BarFly form. % ====================================================================== % Jack Campin
